OverviewBridge Assault is a FPS combat level with an art direction inspired by games like Borderlands. It features 3 different combat encounters, 4 weapons, and a final fight against a helicopter. It focuses on cover based combat and faced paced action.

Gameplay
BackgroundThis project was made using an FPS template but an extensive amount of scripting work was done to add to the base features as well as customize the template to fit my design goals. My goal with this project was to create a fun and challenging FPS level with a good sense of rising tension and a great payoff at the end. The linear style of the level allows for highly refined combat encounters and a curated experience to support these goals. An additional focus of mine was to have consistent appealing visuals in an almost comic book style.

Systems and Features
Wave SpawnerCombat encounters can be made up of hand placed enemies as well as these wave spawners which can spawn enemies in bursts or slowly over time. These spawners are activated by triggers placed in the world. This gave me the ability to define specific waves in editor and quickly tweak and iterate on combat encounters.

Helicopter FightThe level ends in a climatic helicopter boss fight. You can't shoot the helicopter down so you'll simply have to run and hide. You'll have to do this while still fighting through hordes of enemies. After fighting through the rest of the enemies the player can find some exploding barrels that can be used to blow up the helicopter and end the level. This battle tests your ability to find cover, take down enemies, and dodge barrels, all while staying out of sight of the helicopter.

Switchable WeaponsThis level includes four different weapons: the pistol, the rifle, the laser gun, and the rocket launcher. Only pistol and rifle ammo can be found in enemy drops so use laser and rocket launcher sparingly.
This gives every encounter a layer of risk vs reward. Do you use up your rocket launcher ammo against a tough enemy or do you save it for something harder further down the road? Do use your rifle to quickly pick off enemies or do you use your pistol to slowly decrease their numbers, building up your rifle ammo for more difficult encounters. |
Barrel SpawnerSpawns rolling exploding barrel when the player is near. Rolling barrel present a large danger to the player in cramped areas. Along with this I made a dynamic audio system for the barrel that changes pitch and volume with velocity. It also plays a bouncing sound that changes by the force of the bounce.
This provides another layer of complexity and danger to combat encounters as well as creating another method of dispatching enemies. If you time things right you can take out a whole group of enemies trying to ambush you with a well placed shot to one of these barrels |
